The Blue of İznik, Folded into a Pocket Square
Matching sixteenth-century cobalt and turquoise on a silk loom in Bursa.
The blue of İznik tiles comes from a cobalt glaze deepened in the kiln. Matching it on silk took fourteen trials with our dyer in Bursa.
The patterns were adapted from the tulips and carnations on the walls of the Rüstem Pasha Mosque, then rescaled so the right motif shows when the square is folded.
The edges are rolled by hand. One craftsperson can finish at most twelve squares a day.
